Role Description

As a design engineer, you will be providing technical input to highways and multidisciplinary civil engineering projects. You will be working alongside industry-leading professionals in both the UK and Ireland.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with both existing and new highways and active travel projects, ranging from local junction improvements to multi-million-pound motorway maintenance framework contracts
  • Inputting at early project stages: preparing scopes; specification and interpretation of surveys; site visits; option appraisal and preliminary design; meetings with clients and stakeholders
  • Detailed design: modelling; calculations; drawing production; bill of quantity and design assessment of risk
  • Document contributions including authoring technical reports, such as feasibility, options and planning reports, specifications and contract documents
  • Assisting with the review of others’ work: checking highways design, as a client representative and designer’s site representative
  • Supporting the development of graduate engineers

Essential Requirements 

  • Degree in civil/highways engineering  
  • Minimum three years professional experience as a highways engineer
  • Have recently achieved or have made significant demonstrable progress towards achieving chartered status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or the Chartered Institution for Highways and Transportation (CIHT) or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of DMRB and other standards
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of the Traffic Signs Manual
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Good organisational skills
  • Motivated, with a strong work ethic

Desirable Requirements

  • Ability to undertake highway modelling in Civil 3D or/and OpenRoads
  • Experience in traffic sign and road marking design from preliminary design to the construction phase
  • Proficiency in professional software skills, such as AutoCAD, PDS Signs, Lines or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Confidence to independently undertake detailed design, such as pavement design, vehicle restraint systems design, vertical and horizontal alignment 
  • In addition to working on transportation infrastructure projects, a willingness and an aptitude for understanding and contributing to colleagues’ work in other civil engineering disciplines
